Arts on Grand
Writer's Group

A native Californian transplanted to the Midwest, I was first published in short stories nearly thirty years ago. My first book, a Silhouette YA titled "Playing House," was published in 1986, followed by six horror novels between 1987 and 1992. I have adapted one of my novels, "Wild Card," to a screenplay. Though out of print, these books are still available through Amazon.com under the name Jean Simon.
After more than a decade of devoting myself to freelance work, and as a news correspondent for the Sioux City Journal, I've returned to the tough, time-consuming, frustrating and ultimately rewarding world of novels. In addition to all of this, I'm a member of the Arts on Grand Writers' Group, which meets twice a month; I enjoy word games and puzzles, and am a member of the American Cryptogram Association. I live in Iowa with my husband, Grover Reiser, and a Westie named Kirby Puckett.

Now Available: Online Interactive Writer's Workshop

ENTER CLASSROOM

I'm happy to announce the launch of my online Writer's Workshop, in which aspiring authors can take week-long, interactive courses similar to those I have offered in face-to-face classes over the years.

In the Writer's Workshop you will receive the same lessons I've taught in the past, but at your convenience. You can log in and out during the week of each workshop as fits your schedule, and submit writing you would like to share or have evaluated.

The week-long workshops will be held Monday through Friday, twice a month. The last lesson will be presented on Friday, and final evaluations will be given no later than Sunday.

HOW IT WORKS:

  • Once enrolled (payment is made through PAYPAL), your email address will be entered at the workshop site so you will be cleared to enter.
  • You will create a Google account to access the course, with a Username and Password. This costs you nothing, and if you wish you can always cancel the Google account after the course.
  • Each day's lesson will end with a brief writing assignment. You will be able to post your submissions directly on the site, and I encourage you to do so. It's nice to have a classroom setting where you can see the postings of the other members. Your submissions will be evaluated by the end of the course.
  • If you are uncomfortable posting your submissions on the site, or find it too tricky to maneuver (it shouldn't be!), you can, as an alternative, submit your daily lessons directly to me through email and I'll reply in kind.

COST:

The cost of the one-week workshop will be $60. This is slightly more than the price of the full-day workshops I teach at Community Colleges and through Community Education Departments throughout the Midwest, but you get it for a full week!

Other news: Shapato Publishing's latest book, the popular anthology "Walking Beans Wasn't Something You Did With Your Dog: Stories of Growing Up in and Around Small Towns in the Midwest," is now available on the Shapato Publishing Website, as well as at Amazon.com and other online booksellers.

While you're there, be sure to also check out my children's picture book, titled Olivia's Birthday Puppy. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm an advocate of adopting animals from Rescue Shelters, and that I'd like nothing better than to see all puppy mills permanently closed down.
With "Olivia's Birthday Puppy" I hope to educate children on the joys of adopting a rescue animal. By teaching our children early that the best pet doesn't have to be a purebred or come with 'papers,' we can raise awareness of the millions of animals desperately in need of homes, and hopefully put an end to pointless breeding.

I'm pleased to announce that Shapato Publishing has launched with several new titles due in 2009. This has long been a dream of mine, and I finally decided it was time to stop thinking about it, and to just do it already!

I am currently reworking my horror novel, "Wild Card." First published seventeen years ago by Kensington, it sold well but eventually went out of print. The rights have reverted back to me and I've decided to update it and publish it through Shapato Publishing. And it definitely needs updating! Imagine teenagers who don't talk about going online, cell phones or texting each other. I hope to have "Wild Card" ready for re-release later this year.
